Every beginner asks the same question: should I start with striking or grappling? The honest answer is that it barely matters — what matters is that you pick one and stick with it for six months. But if you want a framework, here it is.
Start with grappling if…
- You are risk-averse or worried about head trauma
- You are shorter or heavier than average
- You want the fastest confidence boost against untrained attackers
- Your local BJJ or wrestling gym is stronger than the local striking gym
Start with striking if…
- You want to test yourself in sparring quickly
- You are tall and rangy
- You care about looking sharp on the feet
- Your local Muay Thai or boxing gym is stronger than the grappling scene
Gym quality beats style choice
A great wrestling coach at a mediocre MMA gym will produce a better fighter than a bad coach at a famous striking gym. Visit three gyms, take a free trial class at each, and pick the one where the coach corrects your form in the first session.
The honest truth
MMA requires both. Whichever you start with, you will add the other within a year. The only wrong answer is not starting.
